What We Do
The House of Mews is Memphis' and the U.S.' first and oldest no-kill, legal cathouse. We rescue cats from local kill shelters, allow them to freely roam our store, and have found loving homes for over 10,000 kitties from 1994 to 2020.
Our mission’s success relies fully on our 20+ volunteers from all walks of life and your donations. The House of Mews oversees over $150,000 yearly in donations. These include services, goods, and sales, plus our four major fundraisers. The donations we receive allow us to provide the necessary daily care for our cats as well as medical services such as spay/neuter and leukemia aids testing.

A Little History
In 1994, Elain Harvey found several cats that were dropped off at Goodwin’s Nursery in Germantown. Months later, more than 60 cats found their way to the nursery. That’s when it became clear to Elain: there was a need for a cat sanctuary in the Memphis area. The House of Mews was born shortly after.
Today, The House of Mews is still run by Elain with the support of volunteers as well as her Board of Trustees. Board members include: Elain Harvey (President), Don Pemberton (Secretary and Attorney), and Natalie Harden Schmidt (Vice President and Attorney).
